Competing in HMC - by Suhaylah Colbie
It was a great honour for us as Surrey learners to compete with peers from other ex-Model C schools in the Horizon Maths Competition, held at Star International College. The Saturday of the competition brought us in contact with the best Maths learners – coming from schools like SACS, Rustenberg, Rondebosch Prep, Greenfields, Fish Hoek Primary and many others.
The first round of the competition was very tough, with 220 learners sitting for the competition. This was scaled down to only 48 who progressed to the second round. I was excited and nervous at the same time, almost overcome by the tense atmosphere. It was challenging, but we managed to overcome that hurdle by the will of the Almighty, allowing us to progress to the second round.
I was completely overwhelmed when I discovered that my class mate, Lathitha Njozela, and I received top results and we were invited to a prize giving ceremony, which will be held at the Baxter Theatre on 6 June.
Special praise and thanks must go our to our maths teacher, Mr Kriel, the competition co-ordinator, Mr Jacobs and our principal, Mr Adams, for all their assistance and support. We hope that we have done you proud. A special thanks must go out to my mother, who assisted me at home.
I hope that the fruits of our efforts will encourage our peers to strive for levels of success through hard work.
